Types of Motorcycle Insurance Coverage

There are many different types of coverage and different ways to lower your costs. Motorcycles are not cheap, so you want to make sure you have enough coverage for any damages or potential theft. The policy you choose will depend on how often you ride your motorcycle and if you ride year-round. If you are planning to make a purchase, think about how you will use your motorcycle. If you already have a motorcycle, think about what kind of policy will fit your needs.

Types of Coverage

Unfortunately, insuring your motorcycle is not a one-step process. There are different types of insurance you may want on your policy. Also, there are certain custom options that may depend on your situation. For example, you might be more concerned with the amount of your deductible if your bike is your main form of transportation versus a vehicle for weekend fun. Another factor might be the base requirements in the state where you live. Overall, the types of coverage you will want to explore are:

  1. Liability: This is required in most states, due to the frequency of motorcycle accidents. If you cause an accident while riding your motorcycle, liability coverage will protect you. You might be responsible for repairs to property, another driver’s vehicle, and possibly even their medical expenses.
  2. Collision: Unfortunately, motorcycle accidents are rather common. Thus, collision coverage is usually a wise decision. It covers any damage that results from an accident. It does not matter if the accident happens with another driver or an object. Collision coverage covers you in either situation.
  3. Comprehensive: This type of coverage can be added on to other types. It can also be the only type of coverage you have while not riding your motorcycle for a period of time. Comprehensive coverage will cover repairs or even replacement needed after damage, theft, or vandalism.
  4. Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage: If you are hit by a driver who doesn’t have insurance or enough coverage, you can get stuck with the cost. To avoid that situation, you can buy this type of coverage and know that your policy will cover any costs that the other driver can’t.

The last important thing to consider about motorcycle insurance is the discounts that are available. Many insurance companies will offer cost breaks for drivers who have anti-lock brakes, an anti-theft alarm, a good driving record, a certificate from a safety course, and so on. There are also programs such as accident forgiveness that you can ask about when you compare quotes. Sometimes, you can get lower premiums if you bundle with car insurance, own a home, and/or have great credit. Finally, some companies offer policies with diminishing and vanishing deductibles as incentives.
