Motorcycles, scooters, and mopeds… oh my!
Language is a tricky thing, because the same word can mean different things to different people. For example, we might have different ideas of what defines a moped versus a scooter. For most people, the difference doesn’t matter and the words are used interchangeably. However, when it comes to having to purchase insurance, you might care about that difference.
First, let’s start with a moped. A moped is characterized as a vehicle with 2 wheels, travels up to 30 mph, and an engine that doesn’t exceed 50 cubic centimeters. So, do you need insurance for a moped? This all depends on where you live. Some states give you the option of purchasing insurance, which is highly recommended.
Moped or Scooter?
So, what is the difference between a moped and a scooter? As far as insurance goes, there is no real difference. Dependent on your state, you will either be required to or advised to purchase insurance for your moped/scooter.
Scooter or Motorcycle?
When does a scooter become a motorcycle? If your moped has an engine size larger than 50 cubic centimeters, it will probably be considered a motorcycle. Generally, this will also be the case if the vehicle can travel above 30 mph. If one or both of these things is true for your vehicle, your state would likely mandate motorcycle insurance. Of course, this is not always the case. Most states require motorcycle insurance if you plan on driving the vehicle on public roads. There are a few exceptions: Florida, Montana, New Hampshire, and Washington.
You might also have to pay attention to some nuanced rules. For example, in Nebraska, a scooter must have pedals. If the vehicle has no pedals, it is a motorcycle and must be insured. And, of course, you must also abide by the rules of your lender if you borrowed money to purchase your scooter or motorcycle. Most lenders will require you to have insurance to protect their investment. Still, even though insurance may not be required, it is always a good idea since life is unpredictable.
